Did Leonardo da Vinci really invent the helicopter, or did he simply draw a picture of what one might look like? It isn’t really the same thing, but it is the case that if you look hard enough, some ideas, hypothetical scenarios, will eventually and inevitably become reality, thus allowing us to proudly state that life is imitating art. That’s not to say it isn’t worth a delicious little shiver when it happens. Science fiction commentators have dined out on this for years.
On the other hand, modern novels sometimes do the exact opposite, reflecting societies anxieties through a glass darkly. Watership Down sold millions because it tapped in to a sentimental regret over a traditional way of British life that was rapidly disappearing down the maw of modernity.

So, are we not all going to end up with robotic partners to do our bidding, travelling to all the exotic places in the world or in our imaginings through vicarious virtual reality holodecks? It would be nice to think so…or would it?
Call Of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Oblivion and the like are a way of life for a whole generation. As an author, I don’t find it a huge stretch to believe that there someday might be a game that could suck people in to such an extent that it begins to take over their lives.
So what would that be like???
“The Bane? What are you talking about?” Oz said, but he had a feeling he wasn’t going to like the answer.
Skelton laughed. “Chaos is what I’m talking about. Madness, fear, terror. It’s coming and JG is the architect. It’s genius. You’ve seen what he can do. Your little friend Piotrowski is just a tiny example. Neural programming controlled and triggered by UHF signals that no one can hear. All from a box in my pocket. “ Skelton slapped his thigh. He wore a nauseatingly smug expression. “Imagine armies who think they’re tigers. Imagine criminals as vicious as wolverines.”
Thoughts like this are what have preoccupied me for the last eight years in the form of a 5 book series. The quote above is taken from the second, The Beast of Seabourne. Out now. You can see that the Bane is a video game like no other. Play it only if you dare.
